There is a special kind of magic in an unplanned journey. My ride to Dhanushkodi, the ‘Ghost Town’ at the southeastern tip of India, was exactly that—a sudden decision that turned into one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

western coastal highway

Riding through the elaborate highways of Tamil Nadu and catching the first glimpse of the mesmerising blue waters of the Palk Strait is an adrenaline rush like no other.

The Call of the Road

Dhanushkodi is where the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal meet. After the devastating cyclone of 1964, it became a town of ruins, frozen in time. For a motorcyclist, the lure of the straight, narrow road with water on both sides leading to the ‘End of the Land’ is irresistible. We started from Trivandrum with minimal gear and maximum excitement.

Pro-Tips for the Ride

  • Hydration is Key: The Tamil Nadu heat can be brutal. Carry a hydration pack or stop frequently for water/coconut water.
  • Check Your Tires: The road to Dhanushkodi is pristine but remote. Ensure your tires are in top condition before starting the final stretch.
  • Timing: Try to reach the Dhanushkodi tip early in the morning or during late afternoon to avoid the midday sun and capture the best light for photos.
